Riding a scooter in St. Kitts
Scooter riding does not suit every visitor. This page sets out what the roads here are like, who should rent, who should not, and what Revura does before you ride away.
The answer turns on the rider, not on the island. St. Kitts drives on the left, and the roads carry steep grades, tight roundabouts, changing surfaces, potholes and rain that takes the grip away. Riders who already ride at home cope with that. Riders who do not should take a taxi or rent a car, and Revura will say so rather than take the booking.
A scooter may suit you if
- You ride a scooter or motorcycle at home
- You have ridden a scooter or motorcycle within the last 2 years
- You have ridden in traffic, not only on quiet roads
- You have ridden on the left, or you are ready to adapt
- You will change your plans if the weather turns
- You want to stop where you like, not follow a tour schedule

Please do not rent if
- You have never ridden a scooter or motorcycle
- Your last ride was years ago
- You planned to learn during the rental
- Hills or traffic worry you
- You have been drinking, or expect to today
- You take medication that affects alertness or reaction time
- You have a cruise deadline and no spare time
Revura refuses rentals and loses the booking. That costs us less than putting an unprepared rider onto the Southeast Peninsula road.
Conditions
What are the roads like?
These are the things visiting riders tell us caught them out.
Left-side driving
St. Kitts drives on the left, and roundabouts run clockwise. The hardest moments come when you pull out of a junction and at your first roundabout, so give the start of the ride your whole attention. Hills and grades
The Southeast Peninsula road runs through steep climbs and descents. A scooter gives you little engine braking, so brake early on the way down rather than late.
Road surfaces
Surfaces change between the main roads and the village roads. Expect the grip to change without warning, and ride wider of the edge than you would at home.
Potholes
A small wheel drops into a hole a car rides over. Scan further up the road than you do at home. It is the one habit that helps most here.
Rain
Rain arrives fast and passes fast. The first minutes are the worst, as oil lifts off the surface. Pull under shelter and wait it out.
Wind
Open stretches on the Southeast Peninsula catch crosswinds.
Other traffic
Buses and trucks share the narrow sections with you. Give them room.
Riding at night
Night riding is allowed on a Revura rental. Lighting off the main roads is limited, and potholes hide after dark.

The Revura SafeRide System
What does Revura do before you ride away?
SafeRide is a set of operating procedures. It is not an insurance product and it is not a guarantee, and it does not mean an accident, breakdown or delay cannot happen. It means these five steps happen on every rental.
Inspection before every rental
Tyres, brakes, lights, mirrors, horn and fuel, checked and recorded before handover.
Helmet fitted, not handed over
A helmet that does not fit protects nobody. Revura fits yours with you at handover, and keeps the scooter until it fits.
Practical control check
A short handling check on the scooter you are taking, before you ride onto the road. It confirms your control. It teaches nobody to ride.
Route and weather briefing
We talk through your route, the conditions on the day, and where to turn back.
GPS-supported roadside help
Send your location on WhatsApp and we come to you. If a scooter is free, we swap it. If not, we refund the rental time you did not use.
What do you do if something goes wrong?
Breakdown
- Get off the road safely Stop where traffic can see you but cannot reach you.
- Send your location on WhatsApp Share your live location rather than describing where you are. A pin finds you faster than a landmark does.
- Wait with the scooter Leave the roadside repairs to us. If you are a cruise passenger, repeat your all-aboard time in the same message.
Accident

Carrying a passenger
A second person changes the scooter under you. It pulls away slower, it needs more room to stop, and it climbs the peninsula with less in reserve. Ride the first stretch alone if you can. Brief your passenger to keep their feet on the pegs and to lean with you, never against you. Alcohol
Do not ride after drinking. Revura will not hand a scooter to a rider who has been drinking, and will not hand one back mid-rental either. The legal limit is 80 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood. On an unfamiliar island, on two wheels, treat your own limit as none.
What if a scooter is wrong for your trip?
There is no shame in it, and the island is just as good seen another way. Common alternatives:
- A taxi tour, which covers the main sights without the clock
- A rental car, which forgives rain and hills
- An organised excursion, if your ship leaves you few hours
Revura would rather you enjoy the island than force a scooter into a trip it does not suit.
Safety questions
Is it safe to ride a scooter in St. Kitts?
It depends on the rider. Someone who rides at home and respects the conditions gets a good way to see the island. Someone who has never ridden does not, and nothing we do on the day changes that.
What happens if the weather turns while I am out?
Stop and wait it out. Message us if it changes your return timing, above all if a ship is waiting for you, and we will re-plan the return with you.
Do you provide riding lessons?
No. The control check at handover confirms you are comfortable on that particular scooter. It teaches nobody to ride, and it will not get an inexperienced rider onto the road.
Do I have to wear a helmet?
On a Revura rental, yes. We fit a helmet at handover and we do not release a scooter without one. That is Revura’s own operating rule and it stands whatever the law requires.
